Painting Night Skies

Night Sky with Jupiter and Venus  30"x35"

Recently I had the inspiration to paint the night sky.  I was most interested in creating a luminous paint quality, I glazed many layers of purples and blues building the paint layers with lots of medium.  The result is a very rich, dark and moody painting.  I wanted the foreground to be almost black, later I glazed a purple velatura to imitate the silver moonlight on the grasses and trees.  I'm sorry for the terrible picture.  I've tried and tried to capture the detail in the painting, to show the rich textures and colors.  This painting will have to one that was meant to be seen in person, a photograph just doesn't show it's full impact.  I love this painting and was so happy when I finished it.  I'm really looking forward to framing it and I have more ideas for night paintings in the future.

Night paintings are addictive. I like the atmosphere of mystery you have captured and wish I could see it in person.
